Janet Constantino's "Becoming Mariella" follows the titular Mariella, a young Italian immigrant, on a journey of self-discovery. Mariella, plagued by traditions, family expectations, and an engagement she never wanted, leaves her home in Sicily for a new beginning in San Francisco. And, while her new life brings friendships, great job prospects, and passionate relationships, it also has its own roadblocks. With her conflicting desires, she must decide which path will lead her to the freedom she dreams of. Will she choose the life laid out for her or the one she's making all her own? Thankfully, she has her beloved Nonna to help guide her heart along the way.
Constantino paints a vividly beautiful atmosphere and an inspiring story of personal growth amidst adversity. Mariella is a strong, multifaceted main character who will have you rooting for her happiness, no matter where it is.
